Explore effective strategies and guidelines for supporting students with Autism Spectrum Disorder in conduct processes. Learn through case studies and Q&A, from professionals at Marshall University, how to adapt these practices within your institution to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for your students. Attendees will receive resources to assist in implementation of these practices.

Presenter Bios:
Michaela Arthur (She/Hers) is the Assistant Director of Student Advocacy and Accountability at Marshall University. Michaela received her Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication from Winthrop University and her Master of Education in Higher Education Student Affairs from Western Carolina University. She spent the beginning of her career in various roles within university housing before making the switch to student conduct in 2022. With many years of experience in student conduct and advocacy, Michaela has served in various leadership roles within ASCA, including two terms on the conference committee and as a contributing author to the Case Study Resource. Passionate about creating inclusive and supportive environments for students with unique needs, Michaela is dedicated to implementing best practices and innovative strategies. Mindy Thornton is the Director of Campus Based Services with the West Virginia Autism Training Center at Marshall University. Mindy received her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology as well as her Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology from Marshall University. Mindy worked for 18 years in Children’s Services for the local community mental health organization and then the last six years as the Assistant State Director for Necco, a foster care company in West Virginia. She is passionate about advocating for youth with complex needs. In her free time, she enjoys traveling and attending concerts with her two adult children and husband. Contact: wass1@marshall.edu
Nate Hensley With a decade of counseling experience and a professional philosophy of 'never stop learning', Nate is proud to work in mental health and higher education. He completed his Master's degree in Mental Health Counseling from Marshall University in 2013 and has worked in various roles at the university since. His experience started as a counselor working with first-generation college students while completing his LPC and NCC credentials. He is the Coordinator of Campus Based Services with the College Program for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder at Marshall University. Nate has held professional memberships and positions with associations such as the West Virginia Trio Association, Mid-Eastern Association of Educational Opportunity Program Personnel, American Counseling Association, American College Counseling Association, and the West Virginia Association of Student Personnel Administrators. As an adjunct professor, Nate also teaches graduate counseling courses and is pursuing his Ph.D. in Counseling Education and Supervision at Capella University. Contact: nate.hensley@marshall.edu
Jessica Bailey is a dedicated graduate student pursuing an EdS and EdD in Curriculum and Instruction at Marshall University. She is committed to fostering student success and promoting equity in education. She has held multiple interim leadership roles, including Interim Director of the Office of Student Advocacy and currently serves as Interim Assistant Director of Case Management and Data Assessment. In these roles, she has demonstrated strong leadership, problem-solving skills, and a commitment to student support.
With extensive experience in student conduct, Jessica has worked to uphold institutional policies while advocating for student growth and accountability. She has played a key role in case management, policy enforcement, and educational sanctioning, ensuring fair and equitable processes. Her work reflects a deep commitment to student development and ethical decision-making, reinforce her belief in education as a tool for both personal and academic success. Katie Maynard is a Student Support Specialist with the College Program for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder at Marshall University. She obtained her bachelor's degree in communication disorders and master's degree in social work from Marshall University. Katie is currently working on her Educational Specialist in Curriculum and Instruction, EdS, degree at Marshall University. She has experience navigating student conduct cases in higher education.
