Managing Secondary Trauma: Meaning Making and Moving Forward, Part II

Due to the nature of the participant engagement, these webinars will not be recorded in order to provide a brave space for attendees.
Descriptions:
Conduct professionals are traveling alongside students as they experience the highs and lows of life, and they often become exposed to Secondary Traumatic Stress (STS). These webinars will provide an introduction to the subject matter and a deeper dive into practical and tangible ways to combat and recover from STS.
Part I on November 7, 2024: Focuses on creating a shared understanding of Secondary Traumatic Stress and similar vocabulary (Vicarious Trauma and Compassion Fatigue), engage in a TED Talk focused on trauma stewardship, engage in dialogue with the group focused on ways that STS shows up in the daily work, and close with homework (journaling) to explore during Part II.
Part II on November 19, 2024: Participants will reflect on the journaling assignment, process any current experiences traveling alongside students, brainstorm, and iron out realistic methods to combat and recover from secondary traumatic stress.

Presenter Bio:
Dr. Leah L. Ward (She/Hers) is an authentic leader, community builder, story teller, and passionate facilitator. Dr. Ward earned her Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from the University of Dayton in 2024. Her dissertation is titled, “Managing an Occupational Hazard: A narrative Analysis of Secondary Traumatic Stress in Higher Education Student Affairs Amidst The Great Resignation.” Dr. Ward has published two book chapters; Swiss Miss: A Story of Surviving Abroad in The Table: Stories From Black Women in Student Affairs (2019) and Well-Being and Career Sustainability in Student Affairs with Jason Lynch, Ph.D. in Student Affairs Professional Preparation: A Scholar-Practitioner Guide to Contemporary Topics (2024) and has presented at various national and regional conferences and has facilitated trauma stewardship focused content for the Ohio Supreme Court.
