In response to requests for training on how to detect generative AI use in student work without the use of unreliable tools unreliable AI detection tools, this webinar will focus on developed strategies and best practices for both conduct administrators and faculty to determine if and how these tools have been used, and how to discuss these findings with students.

Presenter Bios

Kristin Pendergast (she/her/hers) is the Assistant Director of Community Standards and Conduct at Johnson & Wales University where she is also the founder and chair of their Academic Integrity Committee. In addition to her conduct work, Kristin has created many of the academic integrity initiatives that are an essential part of the culture of integrity at the school. She enjoys training both faculty and students. Kristin earned an M.Ed in Higher Education Administration from Northeastern University and a M.Ed in Counseling from Providence College. In addition to this role Kristin is also an adjunct faculty member in the English Language and Cultural Academy at JWU. Contact: kristin.pendergast@jwu.edu

Marilyn Derby (she/her/hers) earned her BS and MS from Colorado State University in Human Development, with an emphasis on higher education administration during her graduate studies. She has 35 years of student affairs experience, primarily in residence life and student conduct, and has worked on large and medium public campuses as well as a small private campus. Marilyn currently serves as the Associate Director for Student Conduct within the Office of Student Support and Judicial Affairs at the University of California, Davis. As 90% of the caseload involves academic misconduct and nearly half of current academic cases involve allegations of plagiarism with AI-generated text, developing the ability to differentiate student-written text from AI-generated text has been her primary focus since March 2023.
