Community Conversations: Implementing Restorative Practices in an Informal Resolution Process

Part of our Conference Highlights series! Have you been wanting to infuse restorative practices into your process, but unsure how? This webinar will provide insight into an informal resolution pilot project that Tufts University introduced into their process using evidence-based and harm-reduction focused practices rooted in Restorative Justice, Motivational Interviewing, and other Community Standards-oriented processes.
Learning Outcomes:
- Participants will learn skills related to infusing equity in the conduct process through alternative dispute resolution methods (CSAEd™ Domain: Social Justice & Inclusion)
- Participants will be able to identify opportunities to incorporate restorative practices in their student conduct process (CSAEd™ Domain: Student Learning, Development, and Success)
- Participants will be able to reflect on the challenges they may encounter with students when implementing a similar process and ways to address those challenges.. (CSAEd™ Domain: Student Learning, Development, and Success)

Presenter Information & Bios:
Lindsay Ferguson (She/Her) Lindsay Ferguson has worked in higher education for over 10 years in residential life, student conduct, and Title IX. She currently serves as the Associate Director of Community Standards at Tufts University, based in Medford, MA, and works remotely from the Pacific Northwest. She earned her BS in Women’s and Gender Studies with a minor in Sociology from the University of Louisville, her MS in Higher Education Administration from Syracuse University, and a Graduate Certificate in Domestic Violence Prevention from the University of Massachusetts Lowell. Lindsay has a passion for creating a caring space for students to reflect on their actions and the impact they have on themselves and the larger community. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time and traveling with her partner and dog (Nemo), and she has embraced her time in the Pacific Northwest learning how to fish, camp, and forage for berries and mushrooms. briana Sevigny (she/they) has worked in higher education for over 20 years in Residential Life and Student Conduct capacities at a variety of institutions in the New England region. They have served as the Director of Community Standards at Tufts University since July 2020. briana seeks to infuse social and environmental justice, restorative practices, holistic wellness, and life skill building into her daily work with students, while also working to provide mentorship, collaboration, and collegial accountability into her cross-departmental efforts. briana has spent significant time on interdisciplinary dialogue around identity, generative AI, and network building. With a BA in English (University of New Hampshire), an MS in Counselor Education: Student Development Higher Education (Central Connecticut State University), and a Master of Legal Studies (Northeastern University School of Law), briana enjoys learning formally and informally. Lindsay Walcott (she/her) is currently the Assistant Director of Community Standards at Tufts University, in Medford, MA since January 2022. Lindsay earned her Bachelor of Science Degree from Lesley University in Cambridge, MA majoring in Counseling and minoring in Social Work, and her Master of Education from Northeastern University in Boston, MA while simultaneously working in an administrative function in the Office of Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution.
After completing her bachelor’s degree, Lindsay worked extensively with at-risk youth who had experienced traumatic events or circumstances in their lives at the Boston Youth Sanctuary in Dorchester, MA, where she developed curriculum for gender-based identity groups. Lindsay’s passion includes providing mentorship and guidance for youth and young adults and views her current role as Assistant Director of Community Standards as an opportunity to ensure students’ compliance with university standards, but also as a time to listen and provide alternative approaches which leads to improved conduct and behavioral choices.
Lindsay has worked in various non-profit organizations such as Action for Boston Community Development (ABCD), where her work focused on youth development, financial literacy, and job readiness; and the YMCA, where she created and oversaw a successful tutoring program.
Lindsay is a foodie and enjoys trying new restaurants. She also is very close to her family and regularly gets to together for Sunday dinner. Lindsay spends a great deal of time with her older sister, Barbara. They love to travel together and watch movies of all genres. Contact: lindsay.walcott@tufts.edu
