Administrators’ Perceptions of (De)Centralized Academic Integrity Structures Webinar

Brought to you as part of the Current Research Series! This research identifies three models of academic integrity conduct structures—decentralized, hybrid, and centralized—at public research universities. These models present distinct benefits and challenges regarding consistency, efficiency, and educational outcomes. The session also addresses administrators' suggestions for catalysts and barriers to structural change.

Presenter Information & Bio:
Dr. Kupenda Palmer
Dr. Mathew J.L. Shepard (He/Him)
Dr. Mathew J.L. Shepard is the Senior Associate Dean for Student Conduct and Community Standards at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he leads the Institute’s faculty-run student conduct process.
Before joining MIT, Dr. Shepard worked in the Office of Student Conduct at New York University (NYU) from 2018 to 2025, culminating in his role as Director. His earlier experience includes positions at the University of Maryland—College Park and Loyola University Maryland.
Dr. Shepard is an active leader in the Association for Student Conduct Administration (ASCA), having co-chaired the ASCA Assessment Committee (2020-2025) and served as faculty for the ASCA Gehring Academy (2022-2025).
He holds a B.A. from the University of Kansas, an M.Ed. from the University of Vermont, and a doctorate from NYU. His dissertation research explored the centralization of academic integrity structures at public research universities. Contact: mshepard@mit.edu
