Position Description

The University of Pittsburgh, a public institution in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, invites inquiries, nominations, and applications for its associate dean of students, culture and community. This is an on-site leadership role.

Reporting to the associate vice provost and dean of students, the associate dean of students, culture and community (ADSCC), plays a central role in shaping and sustaining a campus environment grounded in respect, accountability, inclusion, and ethical student engagement. This position leads the university's efforts to foster a student culture aligned with institutional values, emphasizing behavior management, community standards, and student accountability. The ADSCC oversees the student conduct process, serves as a key case manager for complex behavioral concerns, and works closely with campus partners to respond to student needs in developmentally appropriate and equity-minded ways. This role requires a strong foundation in student conduct administration, case management, and behavioral intervention.

Through the supervision of related departments—including community service, inclusion and belonging, and fraternity and sorority life—the ADSCC provides strategic leadership that connects behavioral expectations with opportunities for reflection, leadership, and community engagement. The ADSCC oversees a 2.1 million-dollar budget and over 20 professional staff.

Position Requirements

The successful candidate will possess a master’s degree in higher education, student affairs, counseling, social work, or a related field and at least seven years of progressively responsible experience in student conduct, case management, or behavioral intervention.

The successful candidate must have demonstrated success in supervising professional staff and managing complex student cases, strong crisis management skills, and experience participating in or leading behavioral intervention or threat assessment teams. Other requirements include knowledge of student development theory, restorative practices, conflict resolution strategies, and experience with policy development, compliance, and assessment practices.
