Position Focus:

The Assistant Director of Student Conduct and Community Standards supports the undergraduate conduct process for students and student organizations in Yale College. The Assistant Director serves as the assistant secretary of the Executive Committee, the disciplinary body for Yale College. The Executive Committee is responsible for the fair, consistent, and uniform enforcement of the Undergraduate Regulations, the disciplinary rules governing students in Yale College, in a manner that holds students accountable and supports learning and development. The Assistant Director holds disciplinary hearings, manages complex academic integrity and behavioral proceedings and documents, and advises students (charged students, students reporting misconduct, witnesses, etc.), colleagues, and faculty on processes and procedures regarding conduct and community standards as set forth in the Undergraduate Regulations. The Assistant Director works proactively with residential college deans and others on how to interact with these processes and how to best support students. The Assistant Director ensures transparency and fosters confidence in student conduct processes.

The Assistant Director supports efforts to educate students, student leaders, members of student groups, and others on the Undergraduate Regulations and academic integrity expectations. The Assistant Director of Student Conduct and Community Standards reports to the Assistant Dean of Student Conduct and Community Standards.

This administrator collaborates extensively with other colleagues in the Yale College Dean's Office, and student and faculty members of the Executive Committee. This position works very closely with the Residential College Staff, the Office of General Counsel, Academic Affairs, Academic Departments, Yale Athletics, the Yale University Police Department, Title IX Coordinators, and other units. This administrator may serve on a variety of committees and take on special projects. They may take on other duties as assigned.

This administrator is expected to stay abreast of current developments in student conduct and higher education administration and maintain a professional network of educators through contacts and membership or association with local, regional, and national professional associations and organizations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage a caseload of academic integrity and behavioral conduct cases and related documents and communications.

  • Facilitate disciplinary hearings throughout the academic year and over the summer.

  • Advise students (charged students, students reporting misconduct, witnesses, etc.), colleagues, and faculty on processes and procedures regarding conduct and community standards as set forth in the Undergraduate Regulations.

  • Utilize Maxient case management software to manage individual conduct cases.

  • Lead educational workshops for students, including sessions with new students on academic integrity.

  • Assist with recruiting and interviewing students for membership on the Executive Committee.

  • Assist with training Executive Committee students, faculty, and staff members.

  • Help develop and facilitate restorative practices programming and interventions for individuals and student organizations related to conflict management, mediation, and community building.

  • Assist with hazing response (investigation, adjudication), prevention (education and programming), and public reporting.

  • Assist with maintaining student conduct records, tracking data, and creating reports.

  • Assist with major campus events like Orientation, Spring Fling, Senior Week, Yale/Harvard Game, and large dances.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Essential Duties:

  1. Manages and leads research on various federal rules and regulations as well as University policies and procedures to resolve problems and determine the best course of action for the functional area.

  2. Recommends course of action to higher authority for the handling and disposition of problems related to the functional area.

  3. Counsels faculty, students and staff on issues related to administrative operations of the University function and areas of concern for the function.

  4. Manages statistical and analytical information regarding office activities and areas of operational and administrative concern for the function.

  5. Leads in long-range planning for the office activities of a specific functional area.

  6. Interprets and administers various University and federal policies and regulations.

  7. Disseminates accurate and up-to-date information regarding areas of concern.

  8. Formulates and establishes policies regarding area's function.

  9. Manages a staff of exempt and non-exempt employees.

  10. May perform other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements

Required Education and Experience:

  • Minimum requirement of Bachelor's Degree in related field and three years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.

Required Skill/Ability 5:

  • Occasional evenings and weekends. Ability to be available to adjudicate and hear cases under time pressure throughout the calendar year. Demonstrated ability to be consistently and predictably available and ability to respond to urgent questions and concerns related to on-campus issues.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

  • Master's degree and at least 4 years of experience in student conduct and higher-education administration preferred. Proven experience in working with students, faculty, academic administrators. Knowledgeable about issues in student affairs, student conduct, restorative justice practices, and hazing response and prevention.
