Conduct with C.A.R.E. - 2024

In response to the evolving behaviors and increasing needs for this newer generation of students, Johnson & Wales University enhanced their conduct review process, re-envisioned educational sanctioning, identified key stakeholders to collaborate with on intentional programming, and implemented assessment to measure the impact of delivering conduct with an emphasis on C.A.R.E. (Connection, asking questions, reviewing expectations and evaluating learning and understanding).

Presenter Bios

Joe Berardi, M.S. (He/Him/His) has overseen Johnson & Wales University’s campus wide student code of conduct and conduct review process since November 2021. Berardi collaborates with university stakeholders on crisis response and on addressing student conduct and academic integrity cases. He joined JWU after working at the University of Rhode Island (URI), where he held student affairs positions since 2007. Berardi earned his M.S. degree in human development and family studies from URI and his B.S. degree in sport management from the Isenberg School of Management at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

Jennifer Rosa, M.Ed. (She/Her/Hers) has worked in higher education administration for the past 19 years and is in her third year at Johnson & Wales University. In addition to her role as a hearing officer for student conduct cases, she also focuses on assessment efforts for CSC that include managing internal and external surveys through Qualtrics, monthly infographics, and other assessment measures and tools. Rosa received her master’s degree in education with a concentration in mental health counseling from Rivier University in 2010.

Kristin Pendergast, M.Ed. (She/Her/Hers) is an adjunct faculty member in Johnson & Wales University’s English Language and Cultural Academy. She earned master's degrees in higher education administration from Northeastern University and counseling from Providence College. She has worked at JWU since 2011, first in Student Academic Services/Counseling and then in her current role in Student Affairs/Conduct, where she diligently created programming focusing on student development. Recently, her desire to work with ESL students led her to earn a TEFL certification, which has enabled her to teach grammar and communication skills to JWU’s ESL population as a faculty member.
