From Prevention to Intervention: Student Conduct as a Partner in Addressing AOD and Gambling Addictions

Student conduct professionals often address situations of student alcohol and drug use, and while many are isolated incidents, others may signal more significant substance use concerns. This webinar will explore how student conduct offices can partner with campus and community resources to promote harm reduction and recovery.

Learning Outcomes

1. Attendees will learn how to differentiate between isolated alcohol and drug policy violations and situations that may indicate a student is experiencing a substance use disorder or gambling concern requiring additional intervention.
2. Attendees will be able to identify campus and community partnerships that can support students through harm reduction, treatment, and recovery while complementing the student conduct process.
3. Attendees will gain skills to develop proactive strategies that student conduct offices can implement with campus partners to reduce substance-related harm, including substance-free programming and bystander intervention initiatives.
4. Attendees will understand how to apply an approach to student conduct that integrates accountability, education, and care to improve student outcomes and foster a campus community that supports successful recovery.

Alex Schwartz
Alex Schwartz (she/her) is the Assistant Dean for Student Support at UM-Flint in Flint, MI. In her work, Alex focuses on conduct, CARE, and basic needs for students across the University. Alex's career has also included work in Residence Life in California, and as the Director of Student Conduct and Community Standards at the University of Toledo. Alex is passionate about using an educational and restorative approach to accountability with students in college. As part of her focus, Alex has emphasized proactive measures to address substance use and harm reduction, as well as identifying and partnering with campus and local resources to support students experiencing substance use disorder.Contact: schwal@umich.edu
