The work of professional writers and editors requires a careful balance between honoring an author’s voice and meeting the expectations of a readership. This webinar examines how hidden biases shape both editorial and authorial decision-making and offers concrete strategies editors can use to recognize and reduce the influence of individual bias in their practice.

  • Participants will develop an understanding of implicit bias and de-colonizing writing and editing practices.
  • Participants will learn about concrete practices that help mitigate implicit bias in writing and editing written work.

Presenter Information & Bio:

Dr. Megan Davidson (She/Her) 

Dr. Davidson is the Director of the Center for Writing and Public Discourse and a Visiting Assistant Professor of Literature at Claremont McKenna College. Her work examines how institutional norms, editorial sensibilities, and implicit bias shape professional, personal, and academic writing and editing practices across contexts. Her approach integrates writing pedagogy, editorial practice, and bias-mitigation strategies to support greater transparency and intentionality in writing and editing. Working in collaboration with writers, editors, and educators, she emphasizes concrete, equity-minded practices that preserve authorial voice while making editorial decision-making more visible and accountable. Her current projects focus on decolonizing approaches to writing instruction and editing, with practical tools for recognizing and mitigating bias in professional settings.
