Part of our Summer School Series and on behalf of ASCA’s Public Policy & Legislative Issues Committee! Balancing personal and/or professional advocacy in the field of student conduct administration can be difficult. This webinar will provide an overview of what personal/professional advocacy is, ways in which members can engage in advocacy while being mindful of their location and positionality, and provide an overview of how to utilize ASCA's Advocacy Guide to best support personal and professional advocacy.

Learning Outcomes 

1. Attendees will learn about example advocacy strategies in different aspects of the profession such as with government, the local community, or with other campus stakeholders.
2. Attendees will identify ways in which they can balance their professional roles and institutional/political expectations with their personal advocacy.
3. Attendees will learn about updated tools and resources available through ASCA and how they can be used to understand and evaluate issues in the legal and political landscape that impact student conduct administration.

Presenters

Kyle Miller 
Kyle Miller is the Director of Student Conduct & Community Standards at Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania. As a higher education practitioner, Kyle has worked primarily in the public education sector including a decade working in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. Kyle has previously held positions in fraternity & sorority life, student activities, and community & government relations across his career. Kyle has a bachelor’s degree in political science & history as well as a master’s degree in education, both from the University of Pittsburgh, and is currently working on their doctoral degree in public administration at West Chester University. Joshua Cutchens
Josh Cutchens (he/him) currently serves as the Director of Conflict Education & Student Accountability at The George Washington University. Previously, Josh worked at the Association for Student Conduct Administration (ASCA) where he served as the Director of Member Experience & Operations since 2023. Prior to working at ASCA, Josh worked in higher education for almost 13 years and held professional roles in student conduct and Title IX at Appalachian State University, the University of South Florida, and Florida Gulf Coast University. Josh earned his Ed.D. in Educational Leadership from Appalachian State University. His dissertation is titled: Fairness, Equity, and Inclusion: A Social Constructionist Approach to Admissions Prior Conduct Policies and Procedures. Josh earned his M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction with a focus on College Student Affairs from the University of South Florida and his B.A. in History from the University of Florida. Contact: j.cutchens@gwu.edu
